I don’t know about you all, but when it comes to picking out my outfits each day, I often find myself staring blankly into my closet, completely at a loss as to what I should wear. Some days I find myself trying to will the perfect outfit combination to magically jump out at me. I’d be willing to bet that most of you have probably been here before, too. We’ve most likely all had days when we just don’t feel very inspired to put together a cute outfit or anything that even remotely resembles one.

If this sort of frustration is something that’s constantly plaguing you (as it is me), then you’re in the right place! I think I may have a solution for our common dilemma. How amazingly convenient would it be if we could just pull out a few solid, stylish outfit formulas from our back pocket that we could refer to to help us get dressed?

Well, thank me later, because I’ve rounded up five simple outfit formulas in the post below specifically for this purpose. I tried to stick to outfits that most of you would be able to replicate and could wear right now using items that you probably already have in your closet. If you don’t have some of the items mentioned, I’ve included links to shop everything in the “Shop The Look” sections throughout the post below.

Honestly, I had so much fun writing and creating this post, that I’m thinking it just might become one in a series of many outfit formula posts that I’ll be creating and sharing here on the blog. So, stay tuned for lots more fun outfit ideas/combinations in the future! And definitely check back here the next time you “can’t find anything to wear” in your closet. Maybe I’ll be able to help ya out. 😉

 Outfit Formula #1

Black turtleneck/Long-sleeve Top + Black jeans + Black combat boots +

over-sized Camel trench coat

As far as outfit formulas are concerned, you can’t get any more effortlessly chic than an all-black outfit paired with a classic camel-colored trench coat. To give your all-black outfit more of an edgy/cool-girl vibe, you’ll want to “grunge” things up a bit. Start by investing in a pair of black combat boots. (The studded combat boots I have on below are from Nordstrom and they’re honestly the best pair of combat boots I’ve found all season. To shop, check out the “Shop The Look” section below.)

Next, add in a black fitted turtleneck top (or any black long-sleeve top you have), a pair of black jeans (opt for a distressed pair if you want to go full-on “grunge” style, like I did), and lastly, throw on a classic over-sized camel-colored trench coat on top. It’s simple, trendy, and a little edgy all at the same time.

Outfit Formula #2

midi-length skirt (fitted or loose) + Chunky turtleneck sweater + Long

trench coat + Flat brim fedora hat + Ankle Booties (or knee-high boots)

I love this outfit formula because it truly is one of those “wear-anywhere” kind of looks. It’s perfect for weekend events and activities, it works well for the office, and it can even be transitioned into an after-work happy hour or dinner situation. Wherever you decide to wear this versatile get-up, you’re bound to be one of the most stylish peeps in the room.

The essentials that make up this outfit should be items you already own and they include: a midi skirt (either a fitted or a loose/flow-y style), a chunky turtleneck sweater (ideally one that’s over-sized, which can be tucked into fitted midi skirts, or left un-tucked with more flow-y skirts), a classic long trench coat (FYI – the one I’m wearing is less than $30!), a pair of ankle booties (or knee-high boots if you like a bit more “pop”), and lastly, the star accessory of this look: a wide, flat-brimmed fedora hat. (The one I’m wearing is from Urban Outfitters and has been all the rage this season. To check it out, find the “Shop The Look” section below and click on the image of the item to shop it.)

Outfit Formula #3

Over-sized cozy Jacket (teddy coat, sherpa, or faux-fur) + Straight-leg

(raw hem) jeans + Ankle booties

‘Cozy outerwear’ has quite possibly been one of the biggest trends of the season, so it’s no surprise that I wanted to include it in at least one of my outfit formulas. You can choose from a faux-fur jacket, a teddy coat, or a sherpa jacket, whatever you prefer, all that matters is that it is very, very cozy and PLUSH. It will immediately up the style and quality of your outfit, even the most basic of lounge wear pieces. So, if you haven’t already done so, I’d highly recommend investing in the cozy, over-sized coat trend before the season is up. You won’t regret it.

Pair your furry/fuzzy jacket of choice with any basic, neutral-colored top of your choosing, along with a pair of the latest “it” style of jeans: straight-leg denim (preferably, with a raw-hem). To complete the look, a stylish pair of heeled ankle booties will do the trick. And voila! You’ve got yourself a super chic everyday outfit combination.

Outfit Formula #4

Loose-fitting jeans (straight-leg, mom jeans, boyfriend style, etc.) +

basic over-sized tee + chunky knit cardigan + Slip-on Loafers

For another great everyday outfit combination, go for one of the most classic and unbelievably-simple outfit formulas there ever was: a basic white tee and denim jeans pairing. Honestly, you can’t accomplish a more effortlessly-cool “look” if you tried. I know it sounds way too simple, but, trust me, it ALWAYS works.

First, make sure that the t-shirt is slightly over-sized so that you can tuck it into your jeans for a more “tailored” vibe. Also, make sure it’s a plain t-shirt (so no wording or images on it). Again, this just gives a more classic, clean vibe. As for the jeans, opt for a looser, baggier fit. (Think: straight-leg styles, boyfriend jeans or mom jean styles.) Since it is still the middle of winter, throw on an extra-chunky knit cardigan over top of the basic tee. And lastly, pair your outfit ensemble with some chic slip-on loafers. I’ve been LIVING in loafers lately, they’re so unbelievably comfortable. (The black, fur-lined loafers I’m wearing here are from Target and are such a great “dupe” for the Gucci loafers. Unfortunately, they’re currently sold-out, but I did link a similar pair from Amazon for you guys in “Shop The Look” below.)

Outfit Formula #5

Extra-Long Teddy coat + Joggers + Basic Pullover sweatshirt + Chunky white sneakers + Pom-pom beanie

Okay, this last look is ALL about maximizing on comfort, ya’ll. You can find me lounging around in some basic configuration of this outfit formula probably 4 – 5 days a week. So don’t worry, you’ll get no judgments from me if you decide to start sporting this outfit on the regular too.

To replicate this formula, you will require: a basic pullover sweater or sweatshirt, a pair of slouchy joggers, some chunky white “dad sneakers”, and an over-sized teddy coat or Sherpa jacket. Top it off with a pom-pom beanie if it’s particularly cold where you live. And that’s everything you need to pull off this ultimate cozy winter outfit! (P.S. You can substitute your joggers for a pair of slouchy boyfriend jeans if you need to quickly take this outfit up a notch to be semi-presentable for life.)
