Okay, listen up, everyone! The top fashion trends for the fall/winter 2019 season are officially in, and I’m here to give you the 411 on some of the most popular styles you’ll be seeing over the next few months. Now, technically, the trends for this season have already been “in” for awhile now. But, for those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to do the proper research regarding the latest fashion fads, I’ve got you covered! In this post, I’ll be rounding up (what I believe to be) the very best trends of the season.

The styles are vast and varied this year, so there’s truly something for everyone to love, but the trends I’ve included below are my personal faves. I’ll explain exactly how to wear each trend to be on top of your “style-game”, as well as link some of my favorite options for “shopping the trend” for yourself at the end of each section.

So, without further ado, let’s get into all the juicy details…

1.) Long Trench Coats & Capes

This season, when it comes to wearing trench coats, “the longer the better”, is the new standard. If it hits below your knee, you’ve found a winner! I, personally, love a good trench coat. In my opinion, nothing exudes style and sophistication quite like the timeless trench. Whether you choose to dress it up or down, it manages to create a look that is thoroughly stylish.

An alternative to the classic trench that is also “all the rage” right now is the cape. Commonly referred to as a “blanket scarf” or a “poncho”, the capes we’ll be seeing this year have crossed over a boundary from being sweater-like in form, to being more coat-like in form. They’re being crafted as an outerwear substitute and have been popping up all over the place. My favorite way to wear this trend is by going big on the texture and pattern of the cape to add a bit of dimension to my outfit. And, of course, the cozier the cape, the better.

2.) Shades of Green – (Pistachio & Sage)

Any shade of green is really fair game here, but, specifically, pistachio green is “where it’s at” this season. It’s a muted, almost pastel color that has quickly become one of the predominant “it” colors of the fall, and I’m loving it. Pair something in pistachio green with something in white for a soft, fresh vibe. Or, go all out and wear the color from head-to-toe to make a statement. Either way, you’re sure to be the most stylish person in the room. Similar hues, like, mint green, sage green, and olive are also close enough in color to pistachio green that they will totally qualify as being in this “shades of green” trend category.

3.) Plaid

I feel like plaid patterns equal fall, like floral patterns equal spring. This pattern has become such a fall staple that nothing screams bonfires, pumpkins, and changing leaves the way a touch of plaid does. Any type of checkered-looking pattern counts as “plaid” nowadays and the options available this season are absurdly good. While, in the past, plaid was reserved for flannels and scarves, this season plaid is being used on all types of clothing from trousers, to blazers, to trench coats and jackets. In terms of pairing plaid with other items, wearing it with some edgy black leather or distressed denim is always a great go-to fall look!

4.) Animal Print

As if this trend wasn’t gigantic enough this past spring/summer, it’s now going full force into the fall and winter season as well. But, hey, you’ll hear NO complaints from my mouth. I could not be more obsessed with it. The trendiest manifestations of animal print to get your hands on this season are going to be leopard, snakeskin, and crocodile print. As I’m sure you’ve probably already noticed, these three patterns are showing up on literally EVERYTHING. From all types of clothing to all manner of accessories, nothing is off limits! Animal print has practically become it’s own neutral. As for how to wear this trend, I’d recommend investing in some snakeskin or crocodile booties (for sure) as well as some form of leopard print clothing, perhaps a silk-y midi skirt, turtleneck top, or even a faux fur jacket would be great options to start with.

5.) Cozy Outerwear

This trend category is quite a large one and encompasses everything from puffy outerwear (i.e., puffer jackets) to faux fur parkas (i.e., teddy coats, faux-sherling jackets, faux mink coats, etc.). It’s all about staying as warm as possible without sacrificing on style. In the past, our options for warm outerwear were often confined to those that looked frumpy and unfashionable. But, really, what other choice did we have? Anyone who has ever lived anywhere where the temperatures drop below zero in the winter can appreciate the importance of having a proper winter jacket. But thank the Lord, those days are over! This season’s puffers are oozing with style, (I’ve currently got my eyes on the most amazing metallic silver puffer – which I’ve linked below), and don’t even get me started on the faux fur coat options…

The furry parkas I’ve seen this season are some of the warmest, coziest, softest, most luxurious, most fashionable (have I convinced you yet?) outerwear selections ever. When I think of faux fur jackets, I instantly think of luxury and glamour. And while it’s easy to splurge on this type of outerwear, there’s also an INSANE amount of affordable options available out there. The beloved teddy coat is considered a faux fur jacket as well, and it’s popularity has totally skyrocketed since picking up recognition last fall. It seems everyone and their mother has one of these now. And if you don’t, you definitely should consider purchasing one for your fall/winter 2019 wardrobe.

6.) Oversized Sweaters & Chunky Knitwear

“Sweater Weather” is what fall is ALL about. It’s truly one of the things that I look forward to the most about summer ending: getting to take my fall sweaters out of storage again. There’s nothing like a comfy, knit sweater to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. And this season the more over-sized and chunky your knitwear, the better. I personally prefer neutral colored sweaters, but brightly colored (think: neon) sweaters and sweatshirts are also totally in play right now. Feel free to style this trend however your heart desires. Wanna wear it with a satin midi skirt and tennies? Great. Wanna style it with a leather skirt and over-the-knee boots? Awesome. If you’re more of a distressed jeans and combat boots kind of gal, that works too! There are no hard and fast rules for how to wear this trend, as long as you’re veering towards the over-sized end of the spectrum.

7.) Velvet & Corduroy

Both of these fabrics are luxuriously soft to the touch and have an elegant vintage charm about them. They add the perfect amount of texture to an outfit and can be worn a million different ways this season. Think: velvet and corduroy blazers, jackets, boots, trousers, tops, skirts, etc. In terms of pairing these two fabrics with other clothing items, they both look amazing paired with silky pieces (think: satin slip dresses and silk blouses), as well as with chunky knitwear (think: over-sized knit sweaters and cardigans).

8.) Statement Leather

Whether its faux-leather or genuine leather, this fabric is by no means atypical for fall and winter months. Just like it is every year, leather is back again this season, but with a twist. The latest leather trend is focused on “going big or going home”. I’m talking about making a real statement with your leather choices. However you choose to wear it, just make sure its big. If you really want to prove your fashionista status this fall, then prepare to wear leather on much more than just a standard leather jacket and leather boots. This season you’re going to be seeing leather on everything from dresses, to trench coats, to trousers, etc. The more “out-there” it seems, the more “on-trend” it’s likely to be. If you really want to make a fashion statement, try going for a full monochromatic, head-to-toe leather look. I know it seems like a bit much, but trust me on this one.

9.) Mini Purses

While itty-bitty bags might not be the most practical fall trend, what they lack in practicality, they more than make up for in style and chicness. I know they might not be for everyone, but I am absolutely swooning over these oh-so-adorable bags. If you’ve at all got a thing for miniatures (like myself), then these micro-bags might just be your new obsession. While many of them are insanely small, the mark they’re making on the fashion scene is anything but small. They’ve easily become one of the most talked about accessories of the fall, but the best part is that their tiny size also makes for a tiny price tag (unless you go the designer route). Stylish and affordable? That’s the kind of accessory trend I can get behind. They may not be able to hold much more than a stick of gum and your credit cards, but if you want to “up” the status and style of your wardrobe, the micro-purse is a great way to do that. Just be prepared to turn some heads with this one. And don’t say I didn’t warn you….

10.) Seventies Style

Yes, the 1970’s are officially back, people… Or, at least their style is. Some of the most well-known fashion staples of the iconic hippie-era are coming back in a big way this season, including: bell bottoms, platform shoes, corduroy fabrics, turtlenecks, tie-dye, earthy-toned colors, etc. From wide-leg trousers and jeans (yes, flare jeans are back in style again), to over-sized belt buckles and fringed vests, it’s clear that the textures, shapes and styles of the ’70’s are back once more. Some of my personal favorites when it comes to wearing this trend include all of the turtleneck options, some of the platform shoes I’ve seen, and (the 70’s trend I love most), tie-dye. While I’m not a huge fan of bell bottom jeans or fringe details (and therefore didn’t include much of those type of items in the “Shop This Trend” widget), there are plenty of great options available if you’d like to shop those kinds of things from brands like Asos, H&M, Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom, etc. Feel free to put your own spin on this super popular fall/winter 2019 trend.

11.) Nineties Style

Think: Doc Martens, graphic tees, chunky sneakers, biker shorts, chokers, mom jeans, tiny sunglasses, neon, and layers upon layers of denim. All of these things were staple fashion trends of the ’90’s decade. And guess what? They’re all making a fierce comeback this season. If you ask me, the ’90’s were (arguably) the best decade ever. Maybe being born in 1989 makes be biased, but I really wouldn’t have wanted to grow up in any other decade. We had it ALL. I’m talking: beanie babies, gel pens, giga pets, jelly sandals, butterfly clips, furbies, MTV music videos, the Spice Girls, Titanic, Clueless, etc.! I could literally go on for hours, but since the point of this post is to talk about fashion trends, allow me to share some of my personal favorites from the ’90’s. First, I’m very into the grunge trend with it’s combat boots, slouchy over-sized sweaters and rock band graphic t-shirts, yes please. Also, the high-waisted mom jeans trend is huge and has been my preferred choice of jean style for quite some time now. A few other ’90’s trends I’m LOVING are: satin slip dresses, mini backpacks, denim on denim, chunky sneakers, scrunchies, fanny packs, etc. Yep, fanny packs are back too. I don’t know about you guys, but I say “bring on the ’90’s”!
